L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid provided by a mixed dietary protein intake from a variety of sources. L-tryptophan can also be consumed in the form of dietary supplements.
L-tryptophan is an aromatic ring-containing essential amino acid which, due to its structure, cannot be produced by the body and must be supplemented from external sources. In the body, L-tryptophan is a precursor of melatonin, among other things, and is used in several steps to produce serotonin and then melatonin from serotonin.* It is also a precursor for niacin (vitamin B3), as the human body is able to synthesise vitamin B3 from this amino acid in the presence of certain cofactors (1 niacin equivalent = 1 mg niacin = 60 mg L-tryptophan) (1)
L-tryptophan is found in many dietary sources, such as meat, fish, dairy products, eggs, cereals and legumes. It is important to follow a balanced and varied diet to ensure that you get enough L-tryptophan in your body. If you would like to supplement your L-tryptophan intake from other sources, we recommend our Tryptophan supplement capsules.
