The fruit of the saw palmetto was considered a traditional medicine by Native Americans, used to treat urinary and reproductive problems. It is now commonly used in Europe to treat prostate enlargement. Its anti-inflammatory properties have recently been discovered. The lauric acid found in the fruit of the saw palmetto is responsible for its effects on the prostate. Lauric acid is a saturated fatty acid which, in addition to its effect on the prostate, increases HDL ('good' cholesterol) levels.

In prostate enlargement, urine is difficult to pass, it is difficult to pass in thin streams, it often takes effort to pass and there is often a watery urge at night. The hormone DHT is the driving force behind prostate enlargement. DHT, also known as dihydrotestosterone, is produced from the breakdown of testosterone (male sex hormone). DHT plays a key role in childhood prostate growth. However, in adulthood, excessive levels will cause prostate enlargement.

Lauric acid, found in saw palmetto extract, can help with this. As lauric acid prevents the breakdown of testosterone into DHT. Several studies have shown the beneficial effects of saw palmetto on prostate health, and it may also help reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

The anti-inflammatory effects are due to the sterol content of saw palmetto, a plant sterol with a structure similar to cholesterol. Since cholesterol is less than many hormones, sterols can have a wide variety of effects. Saw palmetto sterols have anti-inflammatory effects by stimulating the production of compounds that inhibit the proliferation of inflammatory cells. Since chronic (long-term increased inflammation) is one of the underlying causes of prostate enlargement, its sterol content further enhances its powerful role in prostate enlargement.

In addition, it has immune-boosting effects due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Since increased inflammation also reduces the effective functioning of the immune system. The dose of saw palmetto extract used in most places is 300-600 mg/day. However, no significant side effects have been demonstrated at 1000 mg/day. When taking it, do not exceed the maximum dose tested (1000-1100 mg).
